It might not, and it might. Airlines and border officers compare your passport with your visa, and a name that does not match exactly gives them a reason to ask questions. Rules and practice vary by airline and by officer, so we do not promise that a missing middle name will pass, and we do not promise that it will be refused. The safe move is to remove the doubt by correcting the visa.
Why does it matter if the name differs from my passport?
Your passport is the reference document. At check-in the airline looks at your passport and your entry document together, and at the Vietnamese border an officer does the same. A visa that matches your passport exactly leaves nothing to discuss. A visa that differs, even by a middle name, may need an explanation you do not want to give at the desk.
What counts as a middle name?
A middle name is any given name between your first name and your surname as printed on the passport data page, for example the middle name on a US, Australian or Canadian passport. Some passports show given names in one line and surname in another, so compare the whole printed name, not only the first word of it.
How does a middle name go missing?
- A form field was left short: only the first given name was typed.
- The name was copied from a booking that uses a shorter version of your name.
