How to Apply for a Vietnam Visa as a US Citizen: Choosing the Right Type First

Q: Is Visa on Arrival a different visa type from tourist or business?

No, it is a different document and pickup method, independent of purpose. Tourist or business is still chosen separately.

Q: Is a Vietnam e-Visa valid at all entry points?

Yes, at 83 approved airports, land borders, and seaports, unlike Visa on Arrival which is airport-only.

Q: Are urgent Vietnam visa fees refunded if an application is denied?

Generally no, once submitted, which is why an accurate, well-prepared application matters more than processing speed.

"Tourist" or "business" is one decision. "e-Visa" or "Visa on Arrival" is a completely separate one. Get both right before you apply.

In Short

US citizens choose their Vietnam visa along two independent axes: purpose (tourist or business) and document type (e-Visa or Visa on Arrival). Most travelers should choose the e-Visa — it's complete on its own, valid up to 90 days, and costs $50 for standard processing or up to $215 for the fastest urgent tier. No embassy visit required either way.

Part One

Two Separate Decisions, Not One

A common source of confusion: purpose and document type get mixed together as if they're the same choice. They're not — you decide each independently.

Axis 1: Purpose of your trip

Tourist — vacation, family visits, general travel
Business — meetings, conferences, work-related travel

Axis 2: How you receive the document

e-Visa — complete document, nothing further needed, valid at 83 entry points including land and sea
Visa on Arrival — pre-approval letter exchanged for a stamp at the airport, airport-only, separate cash fee on arrival

Most US travelers choose the e-Visa specifically because it skips the airport counter step entirely — see our full e-Visa vs. approval letter comparison.
